Review of One World, Two Visions Exhibit

The following is a review of the recent exhibit my mother, Maria A. Morales, Chester County artist, and I held at the Chester County Art Association.  I would like to thank the author of the article, Catherine Quillman, for her honesty and beautiful description of the work displayed in the exhibit, One World, Two Visions.  It was a wonderful experience to hold a show with my mother, a source of my education with nature and art.  I would also like to thank Karen Delaney and Darcy Goldberg for their continued support and encouragement in making this exhibit become a reality.

...Also on display, in a separate gallery, is a mother/son exhibit featuring the respective paintings and photography of Maria A. Morales and Luis A. Morales.

Maria is a longtime exhibitor in Chester County who may be the only area artist (after the late Dennis Haggerty) who has found success with work centered on the distinctive colors and themes of the American Southwest, even at a time in the 1980s and 1990s when art buyers were enthralled with the Brandywine tradition.  Over the years, Maria has been loyal to her trademark style while continuing to expand her focus by introducing new work in a series that might include images of Caribbean or (as seen in this show) Ecuadorean women. (The women and their multi-fabric-clad babies are especially endearing).

The ideal of a dual show was stroke of ingenuity, especially since you get to see how mother and son have the same gift for finding that certain gesture or detail that makes interesting art.  (Thoreau’s famous quote is “simplify, simplify, simplify" comes to mind, though I always wondered about his need for repetition.)

Digital photographers interested in “straight” photography (without too much Photoshop) will find Luis A. Morales’ composition skills to be of particular interest.  The landscape, “We Are Four,” for instance, captures what could have been an ordinary group of trees if they were not depicted at a distance where the dips in a field show their branchy forms at different heights.  There are also many floral works, several with incredible close-ups such as “Crown ~n~ White” that reveals how the pistils of a flower really look like that of a crown.

Old New Work

I was looking through the PhotoStream file I have of photos shot and forgotten about and came across one I took with my old HTC phone while waiting for my brother.  I simply composed the shot and took it...then forgot I took the shot. Tonight I discovered the image and decided to play around with it in Photoshop.  The original image was in color and converted it to B&W using Nik Color Efex 3.  Once I got the effect I wanted, I opened it in Nik Collection/Silver Efex Pro 2 and applied the Dark Sepia tone to it.

Thank you for stopping by.  If you like the work I am creating, please let me know.  Don't forget to stop by the Exhibit at the Chester County Art Association on May 29th that my mother, local Chester County artist, Maria A. Morales, and I will be doing.

Up Coming Shows and Exhibits

February 13th - March 14th, 2014

I will be participating in the Chester County Camera Club Photo Exhibition, The World Through Our Lens, held at and sponsored by the Chester County Art Association  from February 13th until March 14, 2014.  The Opening is on February 20, 2014 from 5-8. Stop by and see some incredible photographs from 36 of the Camera Club members. Most works are for sale.  Below are the names of the participating photographers.  Hope you see you there!

May 2014 (TBD)

In May, I will have the pleasure of once again exhibiting my photography along side my mother, Maria A. Morales.  She is a Chester County artist, whose main subjects are Native American, South American, and Caribbean Indian women and children.

She has been painting for over 40 years and has exhibited her work in some of Chester County's most prestigious fine art shows including the Yellow Springs Art Show, the Malvern Retreat House Art Show, the Daylesford Abbey Fine Art Show, and the Immaculata University Art Show (featured artist in 2000), to name a few.  She has had solo art exhibits in Puerto Rico at the Tibes Indigenous Ceremonial Center (Central Ceremonial Indigenia de Tibes) and the Hickman located in West Chester, PA.

Our exhibit, One World, Two Visions, will be held at the Chester County Art Association.  It will tell the visual story of how two artists (a painter and a photographer) view the world around them. More details will follow in the coming weeks.  I hope you will make it to this special event.

Far Too Long

Good Morning Everyone,

It has been quite a while since I posted anything online.  There are many reasons for this, but I won't bore you with the details.  I will try an post again on a regular basis.

This past weekend, some friends of mine from the Chester County Camera Club and I got together at the Conowingo Dam to photograph the mature and juvenile Bald Eagles flying around the area.  It was quite a sight, and although I have been there on several occasions, one can never get bored with the aerial display and maneuvers  these beautiful creatures display when they are on the quest to satisfy their hunger for fresh fish that is plentiful in the Susquehanna River.

I hope you enjoy these photos.  More to come.

The image below is one in a series of shots that shows the juvenile Bald Eagle capturing its meal, and then, as it begins to fly away with it, the juvenile becomes aware that the mature Bald Eagle is in hot pursuit.  Intimidated by this, the juvenile drops the fish in its talons.  The mature Bald Eagle tries to catch the falling fish, but misses.  I didn't realize how funny this looked until I got home and began to process the photographs.

I really like this image for the way the flock of geese behind the Bald Eagle mimic in their formation the position the Bald Eagle is in during its flight.

Take Care!  Thank you for visiting.

New Exhibits
May 5 - July 31, 2013
Exton Library Exhibit

I have been in charge of organizing various group shows for the Chester County Camera Club this year.  Recently, we finished a group show at the Starbuck's on High St. in West Chester, PA.  In May, we will begin a new 3 month exhibit at the Exton Library on Exton, PA.  I am participating in this exhibit along with three other members of the Club. Please stop by and take a look at the wonderful collection of photographs.  All work will be for sale.

I have just had 12 of my Black & White and Color prints accepted at the Vision Expansion Gallery on High St. in West Chester, PA.  The gallery owner says that if all goes well, she will give me wall space...pray all goes well!

I just sold a print to a woman who works at the Paoli Cancer Center at the Paoli Hospital in Paoli, PA.  I am participating in the Chester County Camera Club group exhibit at the Cancer Center.  Our goal is to bring some relieve and comfort to the patients who go to the Cancer Center for treatment and their families.  It is a very moving experience and one that I am proud to be a part of and share with my fellow Chester County Camera Club members.

My photographs can be seen at the following galleries and place of business:

Framer's Market in Exton, PA
Progressive Chiropractic in Paoli, PA
Dr. Douglas R. Vallinino, DMD

I hope you will stop by and see my work at one or all of these wonderful galleries and businesses. As always, I thank you for your support, your business, and your comments.
